What do you need English for?

Four ways to learn

Most people need one of these, or a mix of two

A common, effective combination: a teacher once or twice a week for correction and structure, plus 10 to 15 minutes of daily practice with an app or AI tutor.

A human teacher, one to one

Good fit when
You want correction, structure and someone who adapts to you. Best for speaking confidence, exams and children.
Typical cost
Usually the most expensive per hour. On Preply and italki, tutor prices run from a few dollars to over $40 an hour (25 October 2026).
Watch out
Quality depends on the teacher. A good trial lesson matters more than the brand.

Live lessons built for children

Good fit when
Short, playful lessons with a curriculum, teachers who work with kids, and reports for parents.
Typical cost
Sold as lesson packages or monthly plans. Compare the price per lesson of the same length.
Watch out
Check the lesson length (25 vs 30 vs 50 minutes) and the cancellation rules.

An AI conversation tutor

Good fit when
You want to practise speaking every day, at any hour, without feeling judged.
Typical cost
Free tiers to about $20 a month; some premium tiers cost $40 to $50 (US prices, 25 October 2026).
Watch out
AI is patient but can miss errors a teacher would catch. Works best next to a course or teacher.

A self-study app or course

Good fit when
You are disciplined, on a tight budget, or want vocabulary and grammar between lessons.
Typical cost
Free to about $18 a month (US prices, 25 October 2026).
Watch out
Apps rarely build real speaking skill on their own.

How we work

Plain about what we know, and how we know it

Reviews and comparisons carry a research status, and pages we have re-verified show the date we last checked prices. Most of our platform information comes from what providers publish, their terms, app store listings and public user reviews. When we have not taken lessons ourselves, we say so.

  • Ownership is disclosed. See Guru, SpeakyKid and Tospeak share our owner. They get a note on every page, no review score, and their limits are listed next to their strengths.
  • Prices are compared fairly. A 25-minute lesson is not a 60-minute lesson. We show the price per lesson length where we can.
  • You can check us. We link to sources and correct mistakes quickly: corrections@learnenglish.life.

Quick answers

What is the best way to learn English?

There is no single best way. For speaking confidence, regular lessons with a teacher who corrects you work best, ideally two or three short sessions a week. For vocabulary and grammar, an app or course between lessons is cheap and effective. AI conversation practice adds daily speaking time. Our quiz suggests a mix based on your goal, level, budget and time.

Is an AI tutor better than a human teacher?

Not better, different. AI tutors are available at any hour, cost less and never get impatient, which makes them good for practice volume. Human teachers notice patterns in your mistakes, adapt the plan, keep you accountable and are far better for children. Many learners use both.

How much do online English lessons cost?

On tutor marketplaces, one-to-one lessons range from a few dollars to over $40 per hour depending on the teacher. Children's programmes are usually sold as plans of 25 or 30-minute lessons. AI tutors and apps cost from free to about $20 a month, with some premium tiers at $40 to $50 (US prices, 25 October 2026). Always compare the price for the same lesson length.
