Cambly does not sell lessons one at a time. It sells monthly plans, and every plan comes with a weekly balance of minutes that refreshes each Monday. So the honest answer to "how much does Cambly cost" has three parts: the price of the plan, the minutes that price buys, and how much of those minutes you actually use. This guide works through all three, using prices read from Cambly's own pages on 3 October 2026.
The Short Answer
Cambly's lowest published adult price on 3 October 2026 was $17 a month for the Small Groups plan. Private one-on-one plans started at $39 a month, and Cambly Pro started at $56 a month. Group lessons are also sold by the lesson, starting at $4 each, and a first trial lesson costs $1 for 30 minutes.
Scope: every figure below comes from cambly.com and Cambly's public help centre, read on 3 October 2026, in US dollars. Cambly showed a sale price beside a crossed-out list price, and it shows different prices in different regions, so treat these as the numbers those pages displayed on that date.
| What you buy | Price shown 3 Oct 2026 | List price shown | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small Groups plan | $17 a month | $24 a month | Group lessons only, ages 21 and older |
| Private+ plan | $39 a month | $56 a month | Adds one-on-one lessons |
| Pro plan | $56 a month | $80 a month | Adds access to Pro tutors |
| Group lesson | from $4 a lesson | n/a | 30 or 60 minutes, up to 3 learners |
| Trial lesson | $1 | n/a | 30 minutes, one time |
Every Cambly Plan, Priced
Small Groups: from $17 a month
This is the lowest price Cambly published on its own site on 3 October 2026. It is a group product: you join a native English speaking tutor and up to two other learners, and lessons run 30 or 60 minutes. Group lessons are for adults 21 and older. Private lessons are not included, so if you want to talk with a tutor alone, this is not the tier for you.
Private+: from $39 a month
Private+ adds one-on-one lessons with tutors you choose, and it keeps the group lessons. Cambly lists lesson recordings and transcripts, automated feedback after each lesson, and access to all Cambly Courses in this tier. The private lessons are why most learners step up from the group plan, and why the price is higher.
Pro: from $56 a month
Pro adds a separate set of Pro tutors who are not available on the other plans, plus structured goal-oriented lessons, targeted tutor feedback and self-study recommendations. Cambly describes it as the plan for learners chasing one specific goal, such as an exam, a job, or a move abroad. The step from $39 to $56 buys structure and tutor access rather than more minutes.
One note on the word "from". Cambly printed those prices with a crossed-out figure beside them, which is how a discount is displayed, and a discount usually carries a condition. Cambly's refund policy spells it out: long-term discounts are based on a minimum commitment, so cancelling early forfeits the discount and the days used are charged at the full monthly rate. Our Cambly review covers the lesson experience itself. This page stays on the money.
Cambly Cost Per Hour
Cambly does not print an hourly rate on its plan pages. The pages show a monthly price and a list of what is included, and your weekly minute balance appears inside your account. That gap is why Cambly is hard to compare against a pay-per-lesson platform, and closing it takes one piece of arithmetic.
The formula: monthly price divided by the hours those minutes give you. Step by step, weekly minutes multiplied by 4 gives minutes a month. Divide by 60 for hours a month. Then divide the monthly price by that number of hours. Worked example on a 60-minute weekly balance: 60 multiplied by 4 is 240 minutes a month, and 240 divided by 60 is 4 hours. At $17 that is $4.25 an hour. At $39 it is $9.75. At $56 it is $14.00. Same minutes, three prices.
| Weekly balance | Hours a month | Small Groups ($17) | Private+ ($39) | Pro ($56) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 60 minutes | 4 | $4.25 an hour | $9.75 an hour | $14.00 an hour |
| 90 minutes | 6 | $2.83 an hour | $6.50 an hour | $9.33 an hour |
| 120 minutes | 8 | $2.13 an hour | $4.88 an hour | $7.00 an hour |
Why the balance is held still in that table: Cambly does not publish which weekly balance comes with which price, so we are not going to guess one. The balances above are the ones Cambly itself uses in its help centre examples: it calls a 90-minute week a three-lesson plan, it uses a 60-minute week in another example, and it caps you at 60 minutes in a single day. At checkout your own plan shows its balance. Put that number into the formula and you have your real cost per hour.
Two hourly rates Cambly publishes itself, with no assumption needed. The trial lesson is $1 for 30 minutes, which is $2.00 an hour for one lesson only. Group lessons start at $4 a lesson and run 30 or 60 minutes, so a 30-minute group lesson is $8.00 an hour and a 60-minute one is $4.00 an hour. Cambly does not say which length the $4 rate covers, so the careful reading is $8.00 an hour until you see the price beside a length in your own account.
Cambly Kids Cost vs Cambly
Cambly Kids is a separate product for children, and Cambly does not publish the Kids plan prices on its public pages. The Kids site sends you to a trial request or a sign-up, and the prices appear on the Learning Plans page inside the account. We are not printing a monthly Kids figure without a dated source.
What is public: Cambly's Kids page says the classes are one-on-one with native English speaking teachers, for children aged 4 to 15, with courses levelled from A1 to C1 on the CEFR scale. Trial availability depends on your region. The structure also differs from the adult side in a way that matters for cost: adult plans share one weekly minute pool between private and group lessons, while Kids is one-on-one from the start. Our Cambly Kids review has the plan tiers we track and what each one includes.
What Changes Your Cambly Bill
Which tier you pick. Small Groups runs on group lessons only, Private+ adds one-on-one lessons, and Pro adds Pro tutors and structured lessons. Moving up a tier buys a different mix, not simply more minutes.
How much of your balance you use. Minutes refresh every Monday at 3:00 AM local time and unused minutes expire, with no carry-over. Two learners on the same plan pay very different amounts per hour, and this rule is the main reason why.
The daily cap. You can use up to 60 of your weekly minutes in one day, so a larger balance has to be spread across at least two days. That matters if you like to block your practice into one long session.
Extra minutes. When the weekly balance runs out, Cambly offers extra minutes so you can keep going. They are charged at the standard price rather than your plan rate, and they expire when your plan ends or renews. A fallback, not a discount.
Promotions and commitment length. The starting prices sit beside crossed-out list prices, so part of what you see is a promotion, and Cambly lists codes and seasonal sales on its promotions page. Longer commitments carry the deeper discount, and they are the ones with the early-cancellation rule attached.
Installments. Cambly spreads a 12-month plan across four monthly payments for a small fee. Cancelling stops Cambly's own installment charges. If your bank paid in full and is billing you, cancelling does not stop those charges and you have to contact the bank.
Cambly Cost vs Pay-Per-Lesson Platforms
Cambly and pay-per-lesson marketplaces such as iTalki and Preply charge for lessons in two different ways, and the difference matters more than the headline price. On Cambly you pay a subscription: minutes arrive weekly, private and group lessons share them, and the unused part expires each Monday. Cambly's own pages describe on-demand access at any time of day.
On a marketplace you pay for lessons individually, from a tutor whose rate you can see before you book. Nothing expires if you skip a week, and you keep the same tutor if you find one you like. The trade is that you usually book in advance and the price depends on the tutor you pick.
What that means for your budget: practise most days and a subscription spreads a fixed cost over many hours, so the per-hour figure falls. Practise once a week and expiring minutes work against you, and the same money spent on single lessons can buy more speaking time. The lowest published way to add hours inside Cambly is the group lesson rate, from $4 a lesson, which behaves a little like a pay-per-lesson price. For current tutor-by-tutor rates on the marketplaces, see our iTalki review and our Preply review. Those numbers move, so we do not quote them here without a dated pull.
Three Realistic Monthly Budgets
Three budgets, computed by us from Cambly's published prices on 3 October 2026. Each assumes a four-week month and a weekly balance of the size Cambly uses in its own examples. The minutes are our assumption, labelled as one. The prices are Cambly's.
| Budget | Plan and price | Minutes we assume | Live speaking a month | Cost per hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Light practice | Small Groups, $17 a month | 60 a week | 4 hours | $4.25 |
| Regular practice | Private+, $39 a month | 90 a week | 6 hours | $6.50 |
| Goal-focused | Pro, $56 a month | 120 a week | 8 hours | $7.00 |
Light practice, $17 a month. Two 30-minute group lessons a week, so 4 hours of live speaking at $4.25 an hour. Take the $1 trial first and your first month is $18. This is the lowest honest way to try Cambly for a month, and the budget that punishes you most if you skip a week, because unused group minutes expire on Monday.
Regular practice, $39 a month. Three 30-minute one-on-one lessons a week, so 6 hours at $6.50 an hour, plus any group lessons you join inside the same weekly balance. This is the shape most learners settle into: frequent enough to build fluency, small enough to fit a normal week.
Goal-focused, $56 a month. Four 30-minute lessons a week, so 8 hours at $7.00 an hour, with Pro tutors and structured lessons included. Four 30-minute lessons fit inside the 60-minute daily cap only if you spread them across at least two days. All three budgets assume you use the whole balance. Use half of it and the cost per hour doubles, which is the arithmetic that catches people who subscribe and then travel or get busy.
How to Pay Less on Cambly
Start with the trial lesson. It costs $1 for 30 minutes. It is not free, but it is the smallest amount you can pay to see whether the classroom and the tutor style suit you. Trial availability can vary by region.
Choose the smallest weekly balance you will actually finish, and start low if you are unsure. Cambly moves the unused value of your current plan into a new one when you upgrade, so it costs nothing to wait. A smaller plan you complete is cheaper per hour than a larger plan you half-use.
Add group lessons to your week. They start at $4 a lesson, they run 30 or 60 minutes, and on every plan they draw from the weekly minutes you already paid for. For extra speaking hours without a bigger bill, this is the lever that does the most work. Avoid buying extra minutes where you can, because they are charged at the standard price, not your plan rate, and they expire.
Check the promotions page before you commit, and use the pause instead of cancelling if you need a break: one to four weeks, with your end date moving by the same number of days. If you have not started yet, or you changed your mind within the first seven days, Cambly's money-back guarantee on your first plan is the route to a full refund.
Compare the plans yourself with the numbers above in hand. See Cambly's current plans and prices.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does Cambly cost per hour?
It depends on your weekly minute balance, because Cambly sells minutes, not hours. Divide your monthly price by your monthly hours. On a 60-minute-a-week balance, the starting prices work out at $4.25 an hour on Small Groups, $9.75 on Private+ and $14.00 on Pro. Group lessons, from $4 each, are the one rate Cambly publishes by the lesson.
Is Cambly free?
No. There is a $1 trial lesson that gives you 30 minutes with a native English speaking tutor, but the lessons themselves are paid. The lowest adult plan price we read on 3 October 2026 was $17 a month.
Do unused Cambly minutes carry over?
No. Minutes refresh every Monday at 3:00 AM local time, and unused minutes from the week before expire. Cambly also limits you to 60 minutes in a single day. Both rules are on Cambly's own help pages, and both are worth reading before you choose a balance.
Can I cancel a Cambly plan and get my money back?
You can cancel at any time. You then pay for the days you used at the full monthly rate, and any long-term discount is dropped, so the refund is whatever is left after that. Separately, Cambly gives a full refund if you contact support within the first 7 days of your first plan, even if you took lessons.
Is there a cheaper way to use Cambly?
Group lessons are the lowest published rate, from $4 a lesson, and the Small Groups plan starts at $17 a month. Using your full weekly balance matters more than any single discount, because expired minutes are money you cannot get back.
Where These Numbers Come From
Every price here was read on 3 October 2026 from Cambly's own pages: the plan comparison on cambly.com, the group lessons page, and the public help centre articles on choosing a plan, how a plan works, group lessons, the trial lesson and the refund policy. We are quoting the vendor's published prices and rules, not a test we ran.
Two honest limits. We have not taken lessons on Cambly, so nothing here is a hands-on verdict, and the cost-per-hour figures are arithmetic on Cambly's prices and on the weekly balances Cambly itself uses as examples. Where Cambly does not publish a number, this page says so instead of filling the gap, which is why there is no Cambly Kids monthly price above. There is no rating, score or badge on this page: it is a cost guide. For tutor quality and lesson format, read our full Cambly review. Prices move, so if something here looks out of date, tell us and we will correct it.
