IELTS Academic vs General Training: Which One Do You Need?

What Stays the Same?

Which One is Harder?
Most students find the General Training version slightly easier because the reading texts are simpler and writing a letter is more natural than describing a bar chart. However, the marking system for General Training Reading is stricter. You need more correct answers to reach the same band score as an Academic candidate.
For example, to get a Band 7 in Academic Reading, you usually need 30 out of 40 correct answers. In General Training Reading, you may need 34 out of 40 for the same score. This balances the difficulty of the texts.
