How SpeakyKid works
A parent books a free trial and can pick the teacher from the catalogue. Lessons happen in a lesson room in the browser, with nothing to install. The lesson is in English; the child's screen around it can be in the child's own language (16 interface languages).
After the trial, families choose a plan with one to four lessons a week. Lesson times are fixed once and booked with the same teacher. Parents can change the teacher at any time without giving a reason.
Between lessons, the child has their own area with a personal word list, short word games (such as Sound Hunt and Word Match) and Speaky's Island, a 3D world where Speaky says a word and the child finds it. Games are optional and give stars, capped at 30 a day; stars cannot be bought.
The programme
SpeakyKid maps progress on eight CEFR-based levels, from Starters (Pre-A1) to Pre-Advanced (B2+), with 4,339 words in total. A stone on the child's island map fills when the teacher marks a topic as mastered. SpeakyKid does not prepare for exams and does not issue certificates.
Teachers
Teachers come from See Guru and are approved to teach children. The public catalogue listed 48 teachers on 25 October 2026. Profiles show first names, ratings, lessons given, the age bands each teacher works with, languages, education and certificates. SpeakyKid describes See Guru's teachers as "rated 4.94 in 1,689 reviews, 124,400 lessons with children"; that is the company's own figure.
AI features, and the parent's control over them
Speaky, a voice friend for talking practice (it is not a teacher, and its camera starts off), and a spoken word check work only after a parent consents. AI also writes a lesson report after every lesson from the lesson recording (recording is on unless a parent asks support to stop it) and makes the pictures in an optional hero workshop. Parents can view, switch off or delete Speaky's memory. Of the child's personal details, AI providers receive at most the first name and age, never a surname or contact details.
Prices
The price is the same with every teacher. All plans are paid monthly. Figures checked on 25 October 2026, one child, no promotion:
| Lessons a week | Monthly plan | 6-month course (-5%) | 12-month course (-10%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | $32.07 | not offered | not offered |
| 2 | $64.13 | $60.93 | $57.72 |
| 3 | $83.85 | $79.66 | $75.47 |
| 4 | $96.20 | $91.39 | $86.58 |
That is $5.00 to $7.40 per 25-minute lesson, or $12.00 to $17.76 per hour of lesson time. In euros the monthly plan starts at €29.82, in shekels at ₪120.25. Families with two children get 5% off and with three or more 10% off. There are no single lessons and no lesson packages.
Trial, changes, cancellation and refunds
- Trial: free, 25 minutes, one per child and up to three per family. No card. A trial can be moved at most twice in 30 days.
- Moving a lesson: free until 4 hours before. With less time left, the lesson counts as held. The teacher waits 15 minutes for a late child.
- Renewal: the monthly plan renews until turned off and then ends with the paid month. Courses of 6 or 12 months renew for the same length unless turned off, and the remaining payments of a running course continue.
- Refund: full refund within 14 days of the first plan purchase if no course lesson has taken place; monthly renewals are not covered. In Israel a fee of 5% or 100 NIS (whichever is lower) applies after the first lesson.
- Price changes: 28 days' notice; a course does not renew automatically if its price rose by more than 25%.
Safety and privacy
Lessons are one to one and there is no messaging with other people. A grown-up check guards payments and lesson changes. The child area has no ads or ad trackers. Lessons are recorded for the lesson report and quality checks; SpeakyKid says recordings are stored in Frankfurt and deleted after 30 days, and parents can opt out through support.
A good fit if
- Your child is between 4 and 17 and you want a live teacher, one to one
- You want to choose the teacher yourself, and switch if it does not click
- You prefer a month-to-month plan to a long contract
- Your child enjoys games and would use practice between lessons
- You want a public price list with the same price for every teacher
Look elsewhere if
- You want group classes, longer lessons, exam preparation or certificates: look at Novakid (speaking groups, a certificate per level), Cambly Kids (30-minute lessons) or a Cambridge exam tutor
- You want a phone app for lessons
- You want a large teacher pool and a long public track record: SpeakyKid lists 48 teachers, and the ratings and lesson counts it shows come from See Guru
- You only want occasional single lessons: try a marketplace that sells them, such as See Guru or italki (check its rules for children first)
- Your child is under 4: a play-based app such as Lingokids may fit better for now
