10 Common Job Interview Questions

These are the questions you will almost certainly hear. Prepare an answer for each one before your interview.

1. Tell me about yourself.

Keep it professional and relevant. Focus on your current role, key achievements, and why you are looking for a new opportunity.

Sample answer: "I am a software developer with four years of experience building web applications. I currently work at TechCorp where I lead a team of three developers. I specialise in React and Node.js. I am looking for a new challenge where I can work on larger-scale products."

2. What are your strengths?

Pick 2-3 strengths that match the job description. Use examples to back them up.

Sample answer: "My biggest strength is problem-solving. In my last role, I improved our customer response time by 30% by creating a new ticketing system. I am also very organised and I manage multiple projects without missing deadlines."

3. What are your weaknesses?

Be honest but show you are working on improvement.

Sample answer: "I sometimes spend too much time perfecting small details. I am learning to set clear priorities and deadlines for myself so I focus on what matters most first."

4. Why do you want to work here?

Research the company first. Mention specific things you admire about them.

Sample answer: "I admire your company's focus on sustainability. I read your latest report about reducing plastic waste, and it matches my personal values. I also think my experience in supply chain management can help improve your operations."

5. Where do you see yourself in five years?

Show ambition but stay realistic. Connect your goals to the company's growth.

Sample answer: "In five years, I hope to be a senior marketing manager leading a team. I want to grow with this company and contribute to its expansion into new markets. I plan to keep learning and take on more responsibility over time."

6. Tell me about a challenge you faced at work.

Use the STAR method: Situation, Task, Action, Result.

Sample answer: "Our team missed a major deadline because a supplier delayed materials. I called an emergency meeting, redistributed tasks, and found an alternative supplier. We delivered the project three days late instead of two weeks. My manager appreciated the quick thinking."

7. Why should we hire you?

Summarise your unique value in 2-3 sentences.

Sample answer: "I have exactly the skills you need for this role. I have three years of experience in data analysis, I know Python and SQL, and I have a proven track record of finding insights that increased sales by 15%. I am also a fast learner and I work well in teams."

8. Tell me about your experience with [specific skill].

Be specific. Mention projects, tools, and results.

Sample answer: "I have used Salesforce for two years. I managed our customer database, created reports for the sales team, and automated email campaigns. I also trained three new team members on how to use the platform."

9. How do you handle pressure or stress?

Show that you stay calm and use practical strategies.

Sample answer: "I prioritise my tasks and focus on one thing at a time. When deadlines are tight, I communicate clearly with my team about what is realistic. I also take short breaks to clear my mind. This helps me stay productive without burning out."

10. Do you have any questions for us?

Always say yes. Prepare 3-4 questions in advance.

Good questions to ask: "What does a typical day look like in this role?", "How does the team measure success?", "What are the biggest challenges the team is facing right now?", "What opportunities for growth does this position offer?"
